Susan Diehl

Susan is a native Houstonian with three lovely daughters, two grandsons, and a very supportive husband. David and Susan have been married almost 33 years. The family loves getting away to Lake McQueeney and attends Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral Church. Susan’s passion for volunteering comes from simply wanting to help others.
Many years ago, Clara Lewis asked Susan to help with a new project, now known as The Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts. Susan chaired the first fundraising event, “The Art of BBQ,” which marked the beginning of ten years of service on the Pearl’s board of directors. She selected furnishings for the Pearl initially and again after Hurricane Harvey, and has chaired or co-chaired the Pearls of Art Gala three times. The warmth of the Pearl Fincher staff and Guild, volunteer support, and inspiring art is why she continues to be involved.
In addition to her service at the Pearl, Susan has been an active member of the Junior League of The Woodlands for 25 years, is currently President of the Guild of Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and has enjoyed serving as President of the Centrum Arts League. She has also been involved with Northwest Assistance Ministries, Kids’ Meals, two garden clubs, and with her daughters in National Charity League.
Please join us in honoring Susan for the incredible difference she makes!

American photographer Mark Burns was born in Houston. Known for having a refined “photographer’s eye,” Burns creates compelling images that are a unique mastery of composition, lighting, and photographic technique. He was the family photographer for George & Barbara Bush for 25 years. While very much at home in the studio, Burns loves the challenges of landscape and location photography.
He began working professionally in 1978, primarily as a sports photographer, then shifted almost exclusively to commercial photography. In 2015 Burns completed a five year project photographing all 59 of America’s national parks in black and white. The National Parks Photography Project became an exhibit that traveled to six museums, including the Pearl, during the National Park Service centennial year of 2016.
Burns strives to keep his images timeless, reflecting a personal vision. “There are snapshots and there are photographs,” he says. “A good photograph should convey a feeling or mood, evoke a reaction.”
