The Lines that Fate Follows
Mixed media

11th Grade, Age 17
The Woodlands High School
Conroe ISD
Teacher: Jenny Jucas

Artist Statement
The world of today and the society we live in is made up of lines we draw around ourselves. We as people like to limit our perspectives with categories and labels. I wanted to display these limitations becoming the colors of human character, distorting innocence and direction.

Artist Statement

This art piece was inspired by my late grandfather. I loved him dearly and I wanted to honor him. I made it a necessity to capture his gaze that would make me feel like he was still here. Using charcoal, I drew with much detail to show character.

Family Portrait
Acrylic paint

9th Grade, Age 15
Cypress Lakes High School
Cypress-Fairbanks ISD
Teacher: Casey Blades

Artist Statement
This piece was inspired by my intimate family, which doesn’t live together as four anymore. I made the piece 11x15” to represent my age (15) and my birth date and lucky number (November 11th).
In addition, the central colors for my face are the colors of the Vietnamese flag. I am the only one colored to show contrast between my other family members even though we all go together.

Teacher: Julie Schulte

Artist Statement
My favorite colors are always desaturated grey tints, so by adding bright orange colors this was a big step out for me. This painting means contrast to me; the different sides of me. Most will see me as quiet or calm, but friends will see my more vibrant playful side.

Artist Statement
The waves in this picture represent my pain and grief after losing my sister in a car accident.
In the middle of the waves is me rowing upstream. The golden lantern is God’s light showing me the way. Battered by glass shards, I land on shore greeted by my characters.

Orangey
Chalk and graphite

8th Grade, Age 14
Kleb Intermediate School
Klein ISD
Teacher: Vivian Fridley-Hereford

Artist Statement
After doing timed gesture drawings of live models in class, I was inspired to draw myself in chalk within one class – 20 minutes. Drawing the face in loose gesture style was difficult; getting the eyes and nose in proportion was tricky. Then I experimented with graphite stick and pencil plus chalk in the background and figure to unify. Proportion of foot to the body took some problem solving.

Artist Statement
When I play my instrument, I am transported to places, only limited to my imagination.

Once I had the idea in my mind, I found that I obsessed over it, working on it every single moment, late into the night. I learned I could do so much more than I originally imagined.

Artist Statement
My work of art is of an abstract goat. I enjoy looking at my art because I spent a lot of time working on the lines and the painted sections. While creating my artwork I learned to be patient, take my time, listen to the teacher’s instructions, and be very careful while painting. I think people will like looking at my painting.
