The Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts is pleased to present Photopainting: The Exploration of Pixels and Paint by local artist Terri Sanders. Artist Statement
I carry a sketchbook everywhere I go entering ideas to recreate with different mediums and processes. My influences are everything I see and experience. The subject matter changes between my daily life and my travels. I am constantly drawing, writing, and gathering ephemera that often develops into in-depth and detailed images in my sketchbook or altered books. I long for road trips that always go off the beaten path.
In 2011, my residency at Skidmore College in New York changed the way I approached color theory. I experimented and painted with gouache and watercolor into a series of infrared photographs taken in a cemetery in Puebla, Mexico. The dramatic light of the infrared photography is enhanced with the beauty of the opaque, layered colors of gouache. My process of hand coloring photos resulted in the creation of my “photopaintings.”
Through my continued intense studies, research, and exploration, I have expanded my photography by combining 35mm and digital images with different papers, mediums, collage, writing, drawing, and painting. My photography from Mexico, Africa, and across the U.S. allows me to relive captured images. I continue my education with classes, workshops, and residencies whenever I can. During research and the creative process, new areas of interest arise and lead to the next body of work.
