Theiss Elementary School's 5th grade students learned about the history of the Statue of Liberty, and how it was made. In addition, they learned the patination process of copper. The students used 100% copper to create these works of art. They also learned the repousse process which involves manipulating the shape of metal. They had to understand what relief sculpture is, and the concept of convex and concave shapes. The chemical reaction between liver of sulfur and copper was a part of the experience during this learning experience. The stars represent the Lone Star state we live in, and states that each one of the students is a shining star!
