The Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts is pleased to present Along for the Journey, an exhibition featuring the work of artist Cheryl Pilgrim. Pilgrim is a freelance children’s book writer, illustrator, and former public school art teacher residing in The Woodlands, Texas. She works in a variety of media including acrylic, watercolor, and pencil.
Along for the Journey features illustrations created for the middle grade novel The Littlest Voyageur (2020), written by Newbery Honor author Margi Preus. The book follows a group of Canadian voyageurs in the late 18th century traveling from Montreal to Grand Portage by canoe. A red squirrel – Le Rouge – joins them as a stowaway in the expedition and is in for a terrible shock when he realizes the voyageurs have traveled all those miles to collect animal pelts. With the help of Monique, a smart and sweet flying squirrel, Le Rouge organizes his fur-bearing friends of the forest to ambush the men and tries to convince them to quit being voyageurs.
This high-flying adventure comes to life through Pilgrim’s illustrations of Le Rouge and his companions. The exhibition includes an acrylic painting featured on the book jacket, as well as several pencil drawings that together tell the tale of the squirrel’s brave journey through the Canadian wilderness.
