Carol and Calvin Cobb
Carol and Calvin Cobb are founding patrons and truly the crown jewels of the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts. After they were asked to host a Pearl volunteer event at their artful home in Cypress in 2007, the Cobbs‘ passion for community, education, and arts eventually drove them to become outstanding supporters of the Pearl. Calvin has served on the board since 2007 including his current role of Chairman. Carol has served as a Guild member, Decorations Chair for the 1st Gala honoring Pearl Fincher, 2012 and 2015 Gala Co-Chair, and a committee member for all 10 Pearls of Art Galas. Carol has decorated hundreds of area homes for over 40 years as owner of Design Patch. She is also active in the Centrum Arts League, Shining Stars Guild, and Northwest Assistance Ministries where she co-chaired Jeans & Jewels in 2010. Calvin, an esteemed engineer and consultant to the energy industry for 42 years, has also served as President of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Both are active in the United Methodist Church and added to their joys are bucket-list travel and their combined 4 children and 6 grandchildren.
Carol and Calvin have rewarded us for 10 years with a treasure chest of their time, talents, and resources and the 2017 Pearls of Art Gala thanks and honors them as true Rare Treasures to the Pearl.
A Message from Gala Honoree Calvin Cobb
I have been privileged to chair the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts Board of Directors since the early days of the museum before it opened eight years ago. I have seen the museum grow from a vision of our community leaders to a reality and have seen it become a great source of pride to our community.
From those humble beginnings, the museum has progressed to being named the Houston Press Best Small Museum in 2010 and 2015.
The Houston Press stated, “The Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts has snagged a Best Small Museum nod before. It wins again this year (2015) for the very simple reason that it’s doing excellent work. The brilliance in its programming is that it showcases works rarely seen publicly from small, private collections held locally.”
Our galleries have exhibited 39 shows since opening. Exhibitions have ranged from exquisite European paintings, Texas paintings, Japanese objects, American paintings, contemporary pieces, African Gold, ceramics, pottery, glass, metal, recycled objects into art, Hispanic art, French collections, and much more. There has truly been something to appeal to each visitor.
Education has been a key element of our mission since the very beginning. That vision has expanded to include school children to university students to senior adults. The school program is outstanding, serving 8,000 children each year as part of their scheduled field trips. It is especially heartwarming to hear the comments from the school children about what they “get” from a particular exhibit. Our docents have shared many, many wonderful stories about how the Pearl reached the children.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to thank all of you who have enthusiastically supported the Pearl and created this jewel in our neighborhood. You are part of a special group of friends whose dedication has built a great legacy.
A huge thank you to all those involved in the planning and execution of the 2017 Pearls of Art Gala. We couldn't do it without you!
